2. Confirm the full price. Record the deposit, balance, due dates and what is included. Ask about any separate collection or transport costs.
3. Read the deposit terms. Ask when it becomes non-refundable, whether it can transfer to another litter and what happens if the breeder cannot offer a suitable puppy.
4. Understand the health terms. Check covered conditions, deadlines, required documents, exclusions and the remedy being offered.
5. Clarify registration and breeding restrictions. Ask which documents you will receive and whether there are separate agreements to read.
6. Discuss lifelong support. Confirm how to get help and what happens if you can no longer keep the dog.
7. Keep the final version. Make sure any agreed changes are reflected in the signed documents, and retain your receipts and correspondence.

Deposits, Waitlists and Changed Plans

A non-refundable deposit is not automatically a warning sign. The important step is understanding the arrangement before paying. Ask whether you are reserving a specific puppy, a place on a waiting list or consideration for a future litter.

Discuss what happens if there are fewer puppies than expected, no suitable match, a delayed litter or a change in your own circumstances. Ask whether a transfer has a time limit and whether either party can decline the placement. Do not assume another breeder’s terms apply to this agreement.

What Does the Health Guarantee Actually Offer?

A health guarantee is a set of written terms, not a promise that the dog will never become ill. Read the conditions and the proposed response together.

• How soon must the puppy be examined after going home?
• Which concerns are covered, and for how long?
• What veterinary evidence and notification are required?
• Does the agreement offer reimbursement, a refund, a replacement puppy or another arrangement?
• Would you need to return the dog to receive that remedy?
• Are there limits on amounts or conditions you need clarified?

Start by asking for a clear written explanation.
