The Wise Tools, and how we score

Feed Wise, Treat Wise, Supplement Wise and Clean Wise all run on the same principle: a product is scored from what is printed on its label and what the published science says about those ingredients. Not from marketing, not from what a brand tells us, and not from what a brand pays.

Label first

Every score traces back to a legible ingredient panel and guaranteed analysis. If we can’t read it, we don’t score it.

No pay-to-score

Partners and sponsors are scored on exactly the same rubric as everyone else. Sponsorship never moves a number.

Unknown stays unknown

Anything a brand hasn’t published is marked unknown and removed from the denominator, rather than guessed at or quietly counted against the product.

How each score is built

Each tool has its own rubric because a chew, a bag of food, a scoop of powder and a floor cleaner carry completely different risks. Weights below are the live weights in the scoring engines.

Feed Wise — daily food (100 points, V2)

  • Animal protein quality
    25 pts

Is a named animal protein first, how much of the panel is genuinely animal-derived, and which organs are present — liver, heart and other appropriate organs are scored separately. Plain named meat is never treated as a rendered meal, bone is never counted as muscle meat, and concentrated plant proteins used to lift the protein figure are penalised.

  • Ingredient quality
    20 pts

Every food ingredient is mapped to a canonical identity, tiered, and weighted by its position in the panel. Added vitamins and minerals are separated out first and contribute nothing to this denominator — a product isn't rewarded or punished for its premix.

  • Carbohydrate & plant load
    15 pts

Carbohydrate as published by the manufacturer, or calculated only when ash is disclosed — no ash means no calculated carbohydrate, and the criterion is marked unknown rather than guessed. Refined starches, combined pulse load and split plant fractions apply deductions; whole vegetables and fruit do not.

  • Processing & food integrity
    10 pts

How the food is made — raw, freeze-dried, air-dried, gently cooked, canned, baked or extruded — and how much of the original ingredient survives that process.

  • Transparency & sourcing
    10 pts

Ingredient origin, country of manufacture, facility disclosure and how specific the brand is about where the food comes from. Undisclosed is scored as unknown and removed from the denominator — never invented, never assumed.

  • Nutritional formulation
    10 pts

Guaranteed analysis, calcium and phosphorus, and the adequacy statement — always read at the individual formula level. Adequacy, life stage and nutrient values can never be inherited from a brand or product line.

  • Safety & quality control
    10 pts

Pathogen testing, HACCP and CFIA registration, batch testing and recall history, with recalls inside 24 months shown directly on the product.

Treat Wise — treats & chews (100 points)

  • Ingredient composition
    30 pts

Single-ingredient and named whole-food treats score highest. Unnamed meat, animal digest, by-products, and long low-value panels pull the score down.

  • Physical safety
    25 pts

Choke, fracture, obstruction and splinter risk by treat format and hardness. Very hard chews are capped regardless of ingredients.

  • Label transparency
    10 pts

Full panel, guaranteed analysis, calories, country of origin, sourcing of the protein.

  • Nutritional profile
    10 pts

Protein, fat, calories per piece and how a normal serve fits inside the 10%-of-daily-calories treat rule.

  • Fillers & bulking
    10 pts

Corn, wheat, soy, sugar, molasses, tapioca and starch binders used to pad the recipe.

  • Additives
    15 pts

Artificial colours, artificial flavours, BHA/BHT/ethoxyquin, propylene glycol, nitrites and other label-declared additives.

Supplement Wise — what's in the scoop

  • Evidence for the active
    High

Each active is matched against published canine research. Human-only or in-vitro evidence is labelled as such and never counted as canine evidence.

  • Clinically meaningful dose
    High

Amount per scoop compared to studied ranges for the dog's weight. Sprinkle doses of a good ingredient score as a sprinkle dose.

  • Form & bioavailability
    Medium

The specific form matters — chelated minerals, EPA/DHA content rather than 'fish oil', standardised botanical extracts.

  • Label transparency
    Medium

Per-active amounts, not proprietary blends. A blend that hides its split is scored as unverifiable.

  • Purity & testing
    Medium

Third-party testing, heavy-metal and contaminant screening, NASC quality seal, batch COAs.

  • Safety & interactions
    Gate

Actives with known interactions or narrow safety margins are flagged with a vet-first warning and capped.

Clean Wise — household products

  • Puppy safety
    Axis

Weighted hardest — puppies mouth every surface and metabolise less well than adults.

  • Adult dog safety
    Axis

Acute and chronic exposure risk for a full-grown dog living on the treated surface.

  • Paw contact
    Axis

Residue left on floors, corrosivity and irritation on pads.

  • Respiratory
    Axis

VOCs, aerosols, ammonia and chlorine off-gassing in the shared airspace.

  • Licking / ingestion
    Axis

What happens when a dog licks the treated surface before it dries — the most common real-world exposure.

  • Environmental
    Axis

    Biodegradability, aquatic toxicity, packaging.

  • Cleaning performance
    Axis

Does it actually work — a low-tox product that doesn't clean gets used twice as heavily.

Why a product can score poorly

  • The ingredient panel isn't published online and isn't legible in any available photo of the pack. Transparency is a scored pillar — an unverifiable label is a low transparency score, not a neutral one.
  • The guaranteed analysis is missing, so the nutritional formulation category can't be verified for that specific formula.
  • Ash isn't disclosed, so carbohydrate can't be calculated and is left as unknown rather than estimated.
  • A proprietary blend hides how much of each active is actually in the product.
  • The panel leans on unnamed animal ingredients, rendered meals, refined starches or a heavy combined pulse load.
  • The format carries physical risk — very hard chews are capped no matter how clean the ingredients are.
  • Additives, artificial preservatives or filler-heavy recipes apply caps that a good headline protein can't offset.

A low score is not an accusation — it very often just means the information isn’t public yet. Send us the label and we’ll re-score it.

Scan it, don’t type it

Scanning a UPC opens the existing Wise result instantly. If the barcode isn’t in our index yet, the scanner hands you straight to this submission form with the code pre-filled.

Submit a product update

Brands, retailers and owners can all send corrections. Formula changed? Panel wrong? Certification we don’t show? Send the front, the back and a clear shot of the ingredient panel — plus a copy of any certification you’re claiming — and a reviewer will re-score the product against the same rubric everyone else is held to.

1. What are you sending us?

2. The product

3. Label photos

We score from the label, not from marketing copy. Front, back and a sharp close-up of the ingredient panel and guaranteed analysis are what let us verify and re-score.

4. What needs to change?

5. Certification claim

Certifications only move a score when we can see the certificate. Marketing badges on their own don't count.

6. Your details

Reviews are done by a person. We don’t change a score without a legible label.
