Canada’s Most Luxurious Dog-Friendly Winter Getaways

Ocean-view mornings, mountain-village walks and country-house weekends: five exceptional Canadian stays that welcome dogs, with the details that make a winter escape work.

For a luxurious winter escape with your dog, consider Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino, Four Seasons Resort Whistler, Langdon Hall near Cambridge, Fairmont Le Château Montebello or Muir in Halifax. These five stays pair distinctive surroundings with documented pet policies. The best choice depends on whether your dog prefers beach air, snowy village walks or a quiet country retreat.

A wonderful hotel weekend should feel generous with time. There is room for a second coffee, a proper walk before dinner and an afternoon without a single reservation. Travelling with a dog makes that rhythm especially appealing. Choose somewhere that makes the ordinary moments comfortable, then add one memorable meal or treatment rather than trying to do everything.

This is our editorial shortlist for winter 2026–27, not an independent hotel inspection or a claim that every amenity welcomes pets. Hotel restaurants, spas and pools usually have separate access rules. We have checked the published policies below; confirm your particular room, dog and dates directly before paying.

Choose your winter mood

  • Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino: ocean views and storm-season downtime. C$60 nightly for the first pet, C$20 for the second; selected rooms, two pets maximum.

  • Four Seasons Resort Whistler: mountain-village luxury, no pet fee. Two pets maximum, at least six months old, with no unattended pets.

  • Langdon Hall, Cambridge: a country-house weekend. C$50 cleaning fee per pet; request an approved pet-friendly Cloister room.

  • Fairmont Le Château Montebello: a classic Québec lodge retreat. C$55 plus tax per room nightly, two pets maximum; confirm winter walking access.

  • Muir, Halifax: a waterfront city break. Two pets maximum; notify the hotel before arrival and confirm the fee directly.

Charges above reflect published policies checked November 2, 2026, not a complete quotation. Ask about taxes, deposits, resort fees, damage charges and any holiday minimum stay. Compare the total for your room and dates rather than a starting room rate.

1. Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino: make the ocean the occasion

Some winter escapes ask you to chase snow. Tofino offers a different pleasure: watching the Pacific change character while you have nowhere urgent to be. Wickaninnish Inn’s setting at Chesterman Beach makes the coast the centre of the weekend. Pick this for a dog comfortable with rain and unfamiliar sea sounds, and for people happy to let the weather rewrite their plans.

Book carefully: pet accommodation is available in selected Deluxe rooms, Beachcomber Suites and Frank Island Suites. Naming a category alone does not secure a pet room. The inn permits two pets, with the nightly charges shown above, and provides practical pet comforts including bedding and bowls. A dog may be left briefly only when kenneled and quiet, under the hotel’s conditions. Read the current pet policy and agree on any dinner or spa absence beforehand.

Your indulgent two-night plan

Friday: arrive with enough daylight for a brief orientation walk, then settle in. Save your first evening for the view rather than another drive. Ask about dining arrangements that let you eat without creating an unsuitable absence for your dog.

Saturday: after checking local conditions, take a short leashed beach walk if it is safe and open. Return for drying off and a slow morning. Book Ancient Cedars Spa for one person at a time, or only after arranging suitable care; it is a human indulgence, not a canine activity. Leave the afternoon loose enough for either another gentle outing or watching weather from indoors.

Sunday: repeat the walk your dog enjoyed most, not the one you feel obliged to tick off. Allow a weather buffer for departure. The official storm-watching guidance warns about surge, unexpected waves, slippery rocks and moving driftwood. During severe weather, stay inside. Keep well away from the water’s edge and tidal rocks, and obey beach closures.

2. Four Seasons Resort Whistler: mountain atmosphere without an overpacked itinerary

Whistler suits the couple whose ideal winter weekend includes good service, mountain scenery and a village wander, with skiing an optional extra. Your dog does not need to join a mountain expedition for the trip to feel special. A familiar daily pattern, carried out somewhere beautiful, can be enough.

The resort’s published pet programme accepts up to two house-trained cats or dogs at least six months old, without a pet fee. Damage or excessive cleaning can still be charged. Pets must not be left unattended. Concierge can connect guests with local walkers or sitters; that is a referral, not a guaranteed place or included service. Settle care before buying non-refundable lift tickets or reserving a long treatment.

Your indulgent two-night plan

Friday: check in, give your dog a calm settling-in period and take a modest village walk. Plan an easy evening rather than expecting a travel-tired dog to manage crowds immediately.

Saturday: choose an appropriate, currently maintained section of the Valley Trail for a leashed morning walk. Whistler maintains a winter-cleared network, but surfaces and conditions vary. Consult the municipal winter information and shorten the route if footing deteriorates. Divide the afternoon between a human ski or spa appointment and time with the dog, or use care you have explicitly confirmed.

Sunday: make breakfast unhurried, then enjoy one final village outing before the road journey. Do not import a summer hiking itinerary into winter: dogs are prohibited in Lost Lake Park during winter Nordic operations. Ask for a permitted winter multi-use alternative instead.

Worth knowing: do not rely on a winter restaurant patio as your meal plan. Confirm dining and room-service options for your dates. The resort’s house-car and shuttle policy also requires an ordinary pet to travel in a carrier.

3. Langdon Hall, Cambridge: a country-house pause

Langdon Hall is the choice for travellers who want the hotel itself to be the destination. A country setting, a considered meal and time together can fill a weekend without an ambitious excursion. It is especially appealing when you would rather unpack once and stop driving.

Start with the room, not the restaurant reservation. The dedicated pet policy identifies limited terrace-level Cloister accommodation, charges C$50 per pet for cleaning and allows two pets. Confirm the exact assigned room in writing. Pets are not permitted in dining areas, the spa, pool or fitness spaces. Housekeeping also needs your dog secured in a carrier or out of the room.

A Cloister Terrace King, with a wood-burning fireplace and soaking tub, is an appealing request, subject to pet allocation. Ask about steps and the easiest outdoor access if either of you has mobility needs. The most beautiful room is not the best room if every toilet break becomes a struggle.

Your indulgent two-night plan

Friday: arrive early enough to learn the outdoor route from your room. Have staff identify a suitable short walk and any slippery or closed areas. Spend the first evening settling in rather than testing how long your dog can tolerate being alone.

Saturday: ask which estate paths are currently appropriate for a dog walk. The property has woodland walking opportunities, but that does not guarantee every path is cleared or suitable in winter. Keep the morning flexible. Later, alternate a spa appointment with dog time, or arrange a sitter before committing both people to dinner.

Sunday: enjoy a final quiet outing and a leisurely departure. Langdon Hall’s concierge page offers a pet-sitting request process, but a submitted form is not a confirmed booking. Get an actual response, the cost and the care arrangements before treating that evening as covered.

4. Fairmont Le Château Montebello: the winter lodge weekend

Montebello brings a different kind of grandeur: a substantial log hotel in the Outaouais, made for travellers who enjoy the character of an established resort. It is an attractive alternative to another city weekend, particularly if your priorities are a handsome setting and a slower pace rather than fitting in every available activity.

The hotel’s guest-services policy lists C$55 plus tax per room per night for up to two pets. Dogs must be leashed on the grounds. Ask for the current list of pet-accessible spaces and the unattended-pet rules before arrival. A room booking does not imply access to the famous lobby, restaurants, spa or every activity.

Your indulgent two-night plan

Friday: arrive, settle in and ask staff to mark a permitted winter dog-walking route. Keep the first outing short enough to learn where the footing and lighting are best.

Saturday: walk together before your human-only reservations. Winter is the crucial qualification here: a trail advertised generally as a resort amenity may have seasonal uses or restrictions. Do not assume a summer pet route is open to dogs during winter operations. If the approved option is a modest grounds walk, build the day around that rather than forcing a longer outing.

Arrange care or alternate time with your dog before enjoying the spa or a leisurely restaurant meal. Confirm the resort’s applicable experience fee and what your dates actually include; snow-dependent activities are not guaranteed simply because you booked a winter stay.

Sunday: leave time for one more easy walk and a calm departure. This is a weekend for enjoying the lodge, not collecting every resort activity.

5. Muir, Halifax: a waterfront city escape

Muir is for the traveller who wants winter luxury without organising the whole holiday around snow. A waterfront base gives the weekend a natural shape: a short harbour-side outing, a good breakfast and another walk when the weather improves. It is also a useful option for dogs who enjoy city sounds more than remote settings.

Muir asks guests to notify the hotel about pets before arrival; its Marriott listing sets a maximum of two. The official pages checked did not establish a clear pet charge. Confirm fees, any size restrictions and the unattended-pet policy directly rather than relying on a third-party “free pets” claim.

Your indulgent two-night plan

Friday: take a brief waterfront orientation walk, then settle into the room. Muir lists chef-driven in-room dining, an especially useful option when you would rather stay with your dog than organise evening care.

Saturday: choose a short out-and-back waterfront walk so it is easy to retreat if wind or icy surfaces make it unpleasant. Take turns visiting human-only wellness facilities, or use independently confirmed pet care. Keep the afternoon for exploring at your dog’s pace, without assuming nearby shops, galleries or restaurants admit pets indoors.

Sunday: fit in a final harbour outing around the weather. A city break works best when you have both an outdoor plan and a comfortable indoor fallback. The view can still be part of the holiday when the sensible decision is to stay warm.

The small arrangements that make a luxury trip work

  • Reserve the pet room explicitly. Give the hotel your dog’s size, age and number of pets. Keep written confirmation with the booking.

  • Book care before human-only experiences. A concierge referral, request form or general pet-friendly label is not a confirmed sitter.

  • Bring familiar comforts. Pack usual food, medication, a bed or blanket, towels, waste bags, a secure leash and the equipment your dog already uses comfortably.

  • Plan for winter surfaces. Check the weather and local route status each morning. Carry suitable footwear and adjust outings to your dog rather than a fixed distance.

  • Protect the quiet. Follow room-alone rules and keep noisy play away from corridors. A considerate stay helps these hotels remain welcoming to future dogs.
