The Best Christmas Getaways in Canada With Your Dog (2026)
Six Canadian Christmas escapes to share with your dog, with festive markets, welcoming stays, destination photography and Pawtastic Vacation Planner ideas.

Québec City, Banff, Mont-Tremblant, Halifax, North Vancouver and Ottawa offer six very different Christmas getaways to share with your dog in 2026. Think market lights, mountain villages and harbour walks, with welcoming places to stay and a holiday paced around the companion coming with you.
Some trips are about doing more. A Christmas escape with your dog can be about noticing more: the first lights coming on, a new street to explore, a quiet walk before breakfast. This is our invitation to make a few of those moments together.
Start with the destination that feels like you, then build your route, dates, budget and activities in the Pawtastic Vacation Planner. Use the Paw Rewards directory to explore places and local businesses along the way. Hotel pet fees below are published policies, not room-rate quotations; confirm your dogs, availability and total price directly before booking.
Choose your kind of Christmas
Québec City: old-world streets and a German Christmas market.
Banff: mountain scenery and an early-season market weekend.
Mont-Tremblant: a festive village escape over Christmas itself.
Halifax: harbour lights and an easy waterfront rhythm.
North Vancouver: a pet-friendly market beside the water.
Ottawa: Christmas shopping and fresh-air breaks in the capital.
1. Québec City: Christmas at walking pace

Old Québec rewards a little wandering. A shop window catches your eye, another street draws you around the corner, and suddenly the afternoon has become the nicest part of the trip. With your dog beside you, there is no need to hurry between attractions.
The festive outing
The German Christmas Market runs November 19–December 23, 2026, on its scheduled Thursday-to-Sunday dates plus December 21–23. Check the daily opening schedule rather than assuming every day is a market day. The organiser welcomes leashed dogs at all market sites and recommends Thursdays or Fridays for a less crowded visit. Choose a short browse if music, crowds or food smells make a longer outing difficult for your dog.
Where to stay
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac offers designated dog-friendly floors with a published C$60 nightly housekeeping charge and a bowl, mat, blanket and goodies. Confirm the right room before reserving, and ask about access to individual hotel spaces.
Your Christmas moment
A little market browsing, a photograph beneath the decorations and an unhurried return to your room. Pack a towel for snowy paws and leave space between outings for a proper rest. Let the lights supply the spectacle while your dog sets the pace.

2. Banff: a mountain Christmas together

Banff is for the dog owner who wants fresh air woven through the whole holiday. Make town your base, keep the schedule light, and enjoy the contrast between a crisp outdoor walk and somewhere warm to return to.
The festive outing
The Banff Christmas Market takes place on selected dates from November 19 to December 13, 2026, at the Banff Heritage Train Station. Dogs are welcome on leash, with owners responsible for cleanup. The organiser suggests Fridays between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for visitors with pets. Check your specific date and book admission ahead. This is an early-season Christmas getaway, not a market that continues through Christmas week.
Where to stay and walk
Moose Hotel & Suites offers designated pet-friendly rooms and suites with a published C$30 nightly pet fee. Arrange that room type directly. For time outside, Parks Canada identifies the 2.1-kilometre Fenland loop as an easy winter walk. Check current conditions and closures before leaving, keep your dog physically controlled on a leash, and turn back when weather or paws call for it.
Your Christmas moment
A quiet morning walk followed by a market visit while the day is still bright. You do not need a summit or a full itinerary to feel you have been somewhere special. Plan warmth breaks and keep wildlife well outside your dog's reach.

3. Mont-Tremblant: the holiday belongs to the village

You do not need skis to find your place in Tremblant's Christmas story. For a getaway with your dog, the pleasure is in the pedestrian village: colourful buildings, a gentle ramble and the freedom to do very little particularly well.
The festive outing
Holiday Atmosphere is scheduled for December 19, 2026–January 2, 2027, from 1–4 p.m. at Place Saint-Bernard, with free admission. Music, storytellers and family entertainment are advertised; the detailed programme is still forthcoming. Give your dog distance from busy performances and an easy way to leave.
The resort rules allow dogs in the pedestrian village on a leash no longer than three metres. Ask before entering shops. Dogs are not accepted on the mountain during ski season, and summer or autumn gondola permissions do not apply to Christmas. Build this trip around the village rather than promising a ski-hill adventure with your dog.
Where to stay
Fairmont Tremblant publishes a C$60 nightly Canine Experience fee. Dogs must remain leashed and cannot be left unattended in guestrooms. Restaurants, bars, spa, pools and the convention centre are off limits to pet dogs. Plan meals and any human-only activities before you arrive.
Your Christmas moment
A village wander as the afternoon turns to evening, then back together for a rest. If skiing is part of the owners' holiday, arrange appropriate care separately and make sure the dog's day is equally well planned.

4. Halifax: harbour lights and salt-air strolls

Christmas in Halifax has a coastal rhythm. Instead of racing between sights, make room for waterfront wandering, a warm retreat and another short outing when the lights come on. This is a lovely option for a dog who enjoys being included without needing a mountain expedition.
The festive outing
Evergreen Festival is scheduled for November 27–December 20, 2026. Its official guidance welcomes pets in general public areas. That is not blanket permission for every enclosed attraction, restaurant or activity, so check the particular stop before taking your dog inside. Begin with a daylight walk to choose your route, then return for the outdoor festive atmosphere.
Where to stay and wander
The Sutton Place Hotel Halifax accepts dogs up to 50 pounds in selected rooms, with a maximum of two pets. Its published fee is C$40 per night, capped at C$175 weekly. Dogs cannot be left unattended, so plan meals and rest time together. Confirm those limits suit your travelling companions before reserving.
The downtown business association's dog-friendly guide offers more ideas for the area. Enjoy the waterfront in manageable stretches rather than making the whole route compulsory. Coastal wind and damp weather can change the feel of an evening quickly.
Your Christmas moment
Harbour air, outdoor lights and a dog who has discovered a whole new collection of smells. Bring a drying towel, leave time for comfort breaks and let the evening stay easy.

5. North Vancouver: Christmas beside the water

For a holiday with harbour views and a dog-friendly centrepiece, make your base on the North Shore. The Shipyards lets you build an afternoon around a simple idea: walk, browse, take in the lights and head back when your companion has had enough excitement.
The festive outing
The Shipyards Christmas Market runs November 27–December 24, 2026, with free admission and an explicit welcome for pets. Weekday afternoons are the organiser's quieter suggestion. The market operates in all weather, so pack for rain and a cooler stretch of standing beside the water.
Where to stay and explore
Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier publishes a pet fee of C$30 plus tax per night, capped at C$90 per stay, including a bed and bowl for use during your visit. Confirm the appropriate room and any dog-specific restrictions directly.
Make the shared adventure a relaxed waterfront wander before or after the market. Follow posted signs and the City of North Vancouver's dog rules: most parks require leashes and some areas exclude dogs. A festive afternoon does not need to include every nearby attraction.
Your Christmas moment
Lights beside the harbour, a few thoughtful gifts and a comfortable base close by. Keep the itinerary flexible enough to trade a crowded evening for a quieter afternoon when that is what your dog needs.

6. Ottawa: a capital Christmas with room to wander

Ottawa's nicest holiday rhythm may be an alternation: something festive, something outdoors, then somewhere comfortable to come back to. A dog is an excellent reason not to turn the weekend into a checklist.
The festive outing
The Christmas Farmers' Market is scheduled for November 28 and December 5, 12 and 19, 2026, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m., at the Cohere Centre, formerly the EY Centre, 4899 Uplands Drive. This is a different event from the Ottawa Christmas Market at Lansdowne. The farmers' market's pet policy allows pets at indoor and outdoor locations: keep your dog on a short leash beside you and away from vendor stalls and products.
Where to stay and walk
Alt Hotel Ottawa Downtown in the Paw Rewards directory is a convenient starting point. Its current hotel policy allows one pet per room, confirmed when reserving, with a C$45 per-stay fee. Pets cannot be left unattended and are excluded from food-service, fitness and spa areas. Keep dogs leashed inside.
For a fresh-air break, the NCC welcomes leashed dogs year-round on the Capital Pathway; choose an appropriate maintained section and check conditions. Pets are prohibited on the Rideau Canal Skateway. For an optional west-end outing, explore Andrew Haydon Park in the Paw Rewards directory. It is an on-leash stop, not an off-leash park; confirm winter access and surface conditions before making the drive.
Your Christmas moment
A few gifts chosen together, a short walk in the winter air and your dog settling nearby at the end of the day. Leave enough time between the market and your next outing for that familiar, happy pause.

Turn the inspiration into your own Pawtastic Vacation
Start with Pawtastic Vacation Planner, then shape the holiday around your dates, budget and dogs. Choose a round trip or one-way journey, tell the planner about your travelling companions and select the activities that matter to you. Guests can begin without an account; the planner asks for your dogs' details and an email for the itinerary.
Choose your festive anchor first. A November market weekend and Christmas week are different trips.
Set a realistic accommodation budget, allowing for pet fees and holiday availability.
Balance one busy outing with a quieter walk and generous rest time.
Browse the Paw Rewards directory for places and services along the route.
Confirm accommodation, pet rules, tickets and reservations directly. The planner suggests possibilities; it does not make bookings.
Pack familiar food, water, towels, waste bags and the layers your dog normally needs. Check road and weather conditions, respect closures, and choose shorter outings when cold, rain or crowds make the original plan less comfortable. The goal is a good holiday together, not a photograph your dog has to endure.
