Three Hidden Coastal Getaways With Your Dog: PEI, Grand Manan and Whiteway
Discover three small dog-friendly Atlantic escapes with seaside cottages, gentle adventures and honest seasonal advice for PEI, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Three small Atlantic escapes deserve a place on your dog-friendly travel list: Cape Traverse on Prince Edward Island, Grand Manan in New Brunswick, and Whiteway in Newfoundland. Each pairs an independently run cottage stay with coastal scenery and room to slow down. Choose the season carefully: this is a warm-weather collection, not a promise of winter openings.
These are three separate mini getaways, rather than a rushed three-province weekend. Pick one, give it two or three nights where booking rules allow, and build the days around your dog’s pace. Start with the Pawtastic Vacation Planner, then use our Canadian seasonal adventure hub to connect your stay with the rest of your trip.
Choose your little Atlantic escape
Cape Traverse, PEI: for a cottage overlooking the Northumberland Strait, a village outing to Victoria-by-the-Sea and a woodland walk. June or late September is the better fit for a short stay; peak-season rentals are weekly.
Grand Manan, NB: for a ferry arrival, an oceanfront cottage and a manageable coastal hike. June through September is our first-choice planning window. The selected cottages operate year-round, but that does not make every island business or trail a winter option.
Whiteway, NL: for a private-cove cottage, Shag Rock views and an unhurried drive along Trinity Bay. Aim for June through September within the operator’s May–October season.
Policies were checked on November 2, 2026. The seasons below are the operators’ published patterns, not confirmed availability or newly announced 2027 dates. Ask for the exact cottage, pet charge and dates in writing before paying.
Cape Traverse, Prince Edward Island: a south-shore cottage and a village afternoon
The appeal here is having very little between your breakfast table and the water. Cape Traverse gives you a quieter south-shore base, with Victoria-by-the-Sea as a small outing rather than an all-day drive. Plan this one around a shore-side morning, a picnic and a proper afternoon back at the cottage.

Stay: Lord’s Seaside Cottages
Cottage 2 at Lord’s Seaside Cottages is an especially appealing starting point for couples: a renovated one-bedroom cottage with pine interiors, a queen bed, separate shower, two-person tub and doors opening toward the water. The property also has larger cottages. Confirm your dog’s acceptance in the specific unit rather than treating a room photograph as a pet-policy guarantee.
The official pet policy lists $20 per night or $100 per week, plus tax. Declare your pet when reserving, bring proof of rabies vaccination and complete the pet registration at check-in. Use the supplied pet blanket on furniture and keep your dog leashed outside the cottage. The policy asks guests not to leave pets unattended; any proposed absence needs a direct arrangement with the hosts, not an assumption that a cottage means automatic permission.
For a two- or three-night escape, timing matters. The operator’s current guidance says shorter stays may be available in June, part of September and October. Its pricing page specifies Saturday-to-Saturday rentals from July 1 to September 15. Tourism PEI currently lists a narrower June 1–October 1 season, so treat the edges of the season as dates to confirm directly. Our short-break pick is June or the second half of September, subject to approval and availability.
Your first afternoon: settle in before sightseeing
Bring groceries for the first dinner and breakfast, including something that needs little cooking. A late arrival should not turn into a search for an open kitchen. Put your dog’s familiar bed somewhere quiet, unpack the lead and towels, and let the first outing be a short sniff rather than a big exercise session.
Lord’s beach-access information describes two stairways down to the shore. That is useful to know before choosing this stay for a dog with limited mobility. Check the tide and footing with your hosts, stay back from eroding edges and leave space for birds. A beach beside a cottage is still a changing coastal environment, not an enclosed dog run.
Your full day: Victoria-by-the-Sea, then a forest option
Make Victoria-by-the-Sea your slow village outing. Keep the route simple: a stroll on public streets, a look toward the harbour and time to sit outside if the weather suits. Take turns entering small shops if you are travelling with another adult. Village charm works best when neither you nor your dog has to negotiate a packed indoor itinerary.
For a summer food stop, Richard’s Fresh Seafood in Victoria is at 2 Main Street. Tourism PEI currently lists July 1–September 7, so it is an option for the weekly summer version of this trip, not a dependable June or late-September lunch. For a shorter shoulder-season stay, pack lunch or buy food before leaving your base. Do not plan around an unverified dog-friendly patio.
If your dog wants more walking, make Bonshaw Hills Provincial Park a separate outing or a stop on your arrival or departure route. Tourism PEI specifically includes Bonshaw in its dog-friendly walking suggestions, with dogs leashed. Choose your route from the trailhead map and turn back while the walk is still enjoyable. You do not need to complete a long loop to make the trip worthwhile.
One important PEI distinction: PEI National Park beaches prohibit pets April 1–October 15. Do not substitute a national-park beach for your south-shore outing without checking the rules. Park trails and picnic areas have different permissions.
For this escape, put “Cape Traverse, June or late September, cottage with dog, short beach access and gentle walks” into the Pawtastic Vacation Planner. Include your dog’s mobility needs and your preferred stay length.
Grand Manan, New Brunswick: an island cottage, a rock arch and a slower clock
Grand Manan makes the journey part of the getaway. The ferry separates a mainland driving day from the island portion of your trip, so give yourself enough time to enjoy that change. Three nights is a more forgiving plan than one: you have space for a delayed arrival, a weather change and a day that does not need to achieve much.

Stay: the pet-friendly cottages at Turning Tide
Turning Tide Cottages identifies Moody Ocean, Funky Sunset and Beach Glass as its pet-friendly choices. All three are oceanfront two-bedroom cottages. Moody Ocean and Funky Sunset list hot tubs; Beach Glass does not. Cozy Forest and Sea Breeze are not pet-friendly, so choose by cottage name, not just the property’s overall pet-friendly label.
The guest manual lists $30 per stay for one pet and $50 for two. The pet rules cap the booking at two pets, require leashes throughout the property including the beach, and prohibit leaving pets unattended inside or outside. Use the host’s pet sheet if your dog will be on furniture or beds. The operator confirms year-round operation, but we recommend a first visit in the warmer months for a wider choice of outings.
Get there: plan the ferry around the dog
Coastal Transport sails between Blacks Harbour and Grand Manan; its general information gives an approximate crossing time of 90 minutes. Pets may remain in vehicles or use the outside passenger decks, but not the indoor passenger decks. People cannot remain in vehicles during the crossing, and returning to a vehicle requires a crew member. Decide whether your dog can comfortably manage the exposed outdoor option before committing.
Reservations must be checked in at least 45 minutes before departure to retain the reserved space. Build in a proper exercise and toilet stop before that deadline, and check the live sailing notices. Bring layers for yourself, a secure lead or harness for the dog and water you can reach without returning to the car. On arrival day, make the cottage your destination rather than squeezing in a hike before unpacking.
Your full day: a short coastal walk with a clear turnaround
For a specific outing, go to North Head Campground & Park’s Hole in the Wall trail. Start at reception at 42 Old Airport Road for directions and current access information. The operator explicitly requires pets to be leashed and gives roughly 30 minutes or more for the out-and-back from the trailhead parking to the rock arch. Secure footwear is required; these are natural coastal cliffs, not a fenced promenade.
Choose the shorter version first. Stop well before an edge if your dog pulls, the surface is wet or the wind has picked up. The operator also describes longer Red Trail extensions, but you can have a satisfying day without adding them. A photograph is never a reason to put your dog near a drop.
For a third day, check the Friends of Grand Manan Trails notices. The volunteer group runs approximately two-hour Monday morning summer walks when weather permits and welcomes dogs under control. The meeting point changes, so use the actual notice rather than assuming a regular departure location. This is a lovely option for a sociable dog; skip the group format if yours needs more space.
Food and the quieter half of the trip
Make the cottage kitchen part of the pleasure. Bring provisions for your arrival evening and ask the hosts where to buy local seafood during your stay. That gives you a dependable dinner without needing to leave your dog alone, which the cottage policy forbids. One adult can collect supplies while another stays with the dog; solo travellers should plan food pickups around permitted access.
Leave an afternoon open for reading, an easy leashed property walk and watching the water from your own accommodation. If the weather turns, that is still a complete island day. Check the ferry before your return journey and keep your last morning light, rather than adding a distant stop between checkout and boarding.
Use the Pawtastic Vacation Planner with “Grand Manan, three nights, pet-friendly Turning Tide cottage, ferry and short coastal walks.” Include whether your dog can settle on an outdoor ferry deck and whether you prefer independent walks or a small group.
Whiteway, Newfoundland: Shag Rock from a cottage in a private cove
Whiteway is the choice for travellers who want a few days “around the bay” without turning every morning into a long drive. The town’s own introduction places it on Route 80 along Trinity Bay, approximately 90 minutes from St. John’s. Shag Rock is the local landmark, and the best plan leaves plenty of time simply to look at it.

Stay: Ocean Delight Cottages
Ocean Delight Cottages has four waterfront cottages named Blueberry, Partridgeberry, Cranberry and Cloudberry, with kitchens and private decks. The property overlooks Shag Rock and has a small private beach and viewing deck. Browse the operator’s cottage photographs to choose the layout that suits your stay.
The official FAQ welcomes up to two well-behaved pets per cottage with approval before arrival and a $25–45 pet fee per stay. Confirm which amount applies to your booking. The usual minimum is two nights, with occasional one-night gaps. The business closes each November and reopens in May. This is not a winter-cottage recommendation.
Our preferred planning window is June through September, with two nights for a simple reset and three if you want a separate driving day. Ask about the precise cottage layout, steps, shore access and any rules for leaving dogs before you reserve. The published pet welcome is clear; it does not establish unrestricted access to every outdoor amenity.
Your first day: arrive with dinner, then stop moving
Keep your arrival evening local. Put groceries away, prepare something easy and take a brief orientation walk where the host permits. Let the changing light over Trinity Bay provide the evening’s entertainment. If you have spent the day driving or flying, your dog is likely to appreciate a familiar meal and a settled routine more than another attraction.
For visitors arriving through St. John’s, this works as an added coastal stay rather than a replacement for the city. If you are arriving by ferry, plan the sailing and onward drive separately; mainland-to-Newfoundland travel is not included in this two-night itinerary. Reserve enough time that you are not trying to turn a major travel day into a scenic detour as well.
Your full day: a small bay drive and a cottage lunch
Choose one direction along the bay rather than trying to make a large sightseeing circuit. Ocean Delight identifies Dildo as a nearby outing, roughly 15 minutes away. For a practical food stop, Dildo Coffee House lists takeout, sandwiches, soups and sweet treats. Its provincial listing gives year-round operation with reduced off-season hours. Collect food with the dog supervised outside, then take lunch back to your cottage. Outdoor seating alone is not proof of a dog-friendly dining policy.
Want a walk beyond the property? The town describes Jimmy Rowe’s Walking Trail as a 2.1-kilometre loop with picnic places. Its page does not publish a dog policy, so make this an optional outing only after confirming current dog access with the town or your host and checking signs. Keep your dog leashed if admitted; do not assume the swimming hole is a dog-swimming area. If access is unclear, keep the day to your approved property walk and scenic stops instead.
On a rainy day, shorten the driving and enjoy the cottage you came for. Bring a book, a favourite puzzle toy and an easy second-night dinner. You need not fill the schedule with boat tours, museum interiors or restaurant reservations whose dog access has not been established.
In the Pawtastic Vacation Planner, start with “Whiteway, Newfoundland, two or three nights in summer, Ocean Delight cottage, relaxed bay drive and easy walks.” Add your arrival point and your dog’s stair tolerance so the route and accommodation questions stay practical.
Make the small getaway feel effortless
Browse the Paw Rewards directory for more pet-friendly places along your route. For these three cottage stays, use the official accommodation links above to confirm the exact unit and current pet terms.
Before paying, match the reservation to your actual dog: number of pets, size if requested, approved cottage and all charges. Save the written policy with your confirmation. Pack a familiar bed, enough regular food, lead and harness, water bowl, waste bags, towels and any required vaccination records. Keep the first meal simple and leave a weather-flexible half-day in the plan.
Use the Pawtastic Vacation Planner to turn your favourite into a route, and return to the seasonal adventure hub for more Canadian escapes. A memorable dog-friendly trip can be wonderfully small: the right cottage, one good walk and enough time to enjoy both.
