Tucked just off Bank Street, Arlington Five is exactly the sort of place you hope to discover while exploring a city.

Ottawa Tourism highlights Arlington Five as one of the city's standout cafés, known for local Lulo coffee, muffins, lattes and its community atmosphere.

Happy Goat is unmistakably Ottawa.

The local coffee company operates cafés across the city, but Westboro is particularly useful for dog owners because you can combine coffee with one of Ottawa's most walkable neighbourhoods.

Happy Goat officially confirms that most of its cafés have patios where dogs are welcome. Ordinary pets cannot enter the café itself.

The Westboro shop adds another reason to stop: doughnuts.

Big yeast-raised doughnuts join espresso, matcha and brewed coffee, making this the place where your innocent morning coffee can very quickly become dessert before noon.

3. Drip House, Somerset

Best for: Coffee that turns into brunch

Drip House is for mornings when coffee alone is not going to solve the problem.

The Somerset location serves specialty coffee alongside a much more substantial café menu: breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, bowls, salads and pastries.

Its seasonal outdoor patio welcomes dogs, making it one of the better choices when you actually want to sit down and eat with your dog beside you rather than grab a latte and continue walking.

The location also puts you on Somerset Street in Chinatown, so there is plenty to explore before or after breakfast.

Best for: A relaxed Glebe coffee stop

Ten Toes is family owned, Ottawa grown and built around the idea of being a neighbourhood gathering place.

Its Bank Street location fits beautifully into a Glebe dog day.

Dogs are welcome beside their humans at the outdoor tables, while the café serves Equator coffee, baked goods and light meals.

This is also one of the better stops if somebody wants matcha instead of coffee—the café has developed a particularly enthusiastic following for it.

This is one of our favourite locations on the list.

Britannia Coffeehouse sits close to Britannia Beach, the Ottawa River pathways and Mud Lake, making it incredibly easy to build coffee into a genuine dog outing.

The outdoor space is dog friendly, and local neighbourhood guidance specifically describes the patio as welcoming dogs.

The café itself is known for espresso drinks, scones and an attached ice cream operation.

Red Door Provisions combines specialty coffee with baked goods, breakfast, lunch and the preserves that originally helped build the business.

Its Beechwood patio welcomes dogs, while pets stay outside rather than entering the café.

That works perfectly in this neighbourhood.

Wise Town is not your standard 3 p.m.-and-we're-done coffee shop.

The Elgin Street café serves specialty coffee, ceremonial matcha, tea, smoothies, mocktails and actual meals, while remaining open considerably later than most Ottawa cafés.

Its outdoor space is identified as dog-friendly in current Ottawa café guides.

That makes Wise Town particularly useful after an afternoon walking downtown when everybody else has started stacking the patio chairs.

Best for: When "coffee break" should actually mean ice cream

We are bending the café definition slightly.

We regret nothing.

The Merry Dairy began as an ice cream truck and grew into one of Ottawa's favourite frozen custard and ice cream destinations. It now serves small-batch frozen custard, hard-scoop ice cream, vegan options, shakes and other treats from its Hintonburg shop.

Outdoor seating makes it practical with a dog, and nearby Fairmont Park gives you somewhere to continue when the tables are busy.

Yes, Happy Goat makes the list twice.

Different neighbourhood. Different adventure.

The Elgin café puts you within easy walking distance of Centretown, the Canal and downtown, and its outdoor seating provides a practical stop with your dog.

Happy Goat's current policy is clear: dogs are welcome on most café patios, but ordinary pets are no longer permitted indoors.
