About Highwood Kennel
Purposeful breeding.
Lifetime commitment.
Nestled near the majestic Canadian Rockies in Calgary, Alberta, Highwood Kennel is dedicated to producing healthy, sound-tempered puppies that strictly adhere to the Canadian Kennel Club breed standard. Our breeding program focuses on preserving the classic features of the Wirehaired Dachshund, including a proper harsh coat, level toplines, elegant head pieces, and correct ribbing and keel structure. We place a particular emphasis on the front assembly, which is the hallmark of the breed, ensuring that our dogs retain the athleticism and drive necessary for their original purpose. Our foundation dogs have been imported from top-tier lines in Romania and Russia, and they are recognized as CKC Champions and Grand Champions in the show ring. Above all, we prioritize the longevity and wellbeing of our dogs; every breeding adult undergoes full DNA panel screening, along with testing for PRA, Lafora Disease, Patellas, and Cardiac health.
Breeder Philosophy
How we breed — and why.
Why this breed
To preserve and improve healthy, sound, breed-typical dogs with stable temperaments and the ability to succeed as companions, show dogs, and sport partners. We first saw the breed at a dog show when 2 dogs popped their head up from a pen, and couldn't help but notice their distinguished beard and eyebrows. We spoke to that breeder for a bit and went home and did some research.
What sets us apart
Highwood combines breed-appropriate health testing, championship conformation, top tier temperaments and hands-on mentorship in dog sports for those who wish to participate. Every breeding and placement is approached with purpose.
Homes we look for
