How to Turn Everyday Dog Training Into Paw Rewards

Learn how to turn everyday dog training into trackable Paw Rewards activities, record progress honestly and earn eligible Treats through consistent practice.

Last reviewed: September 11, 2026

Dog training does not only happen in a class or during a long, formal session. It happens when your puppy waits at the door, when your adolescent dog checks in on a busy walk, when your sport dog practises a clean position, and when your working dog rehearses a skill with purpose and clarity.

Paw Rewards helps you turn those everyday repetitions into consistent, trackable practice. Choose an activity that fits your dog, complete the work, record the result honestly, and save it in the app. Eligible Paw Rewards members may also earn Treats for qualifying training activities, according to the rules and values shown in the live app.

The goal is to help Canadian dog owners build better habits around the training plan that is right for their dog—not to make every dog follow the same program.

How do you earn rewards while training your dog?

Start by adding your dog to Paw Rewards and completing their training profile. Then choose a Daily Training Adventure, a standalone Training Session, or Walk & Train. Complete the selected prompts, record the result, and save the activity. If your account and activity are eligible, the app will apply the current Treat value automatically.

You do not need a perfect session to record useful work. Paw Rewards distinguishes between a skill your dog handled well and one that needs more practice, creating an honest record that can shape future practice.

If you are new to the reward system, read How Paw Rewards Works and the guide to earning Treats in Paw Rewards first.

Choose the right Paw Rewards training activity

There is more than one way to log training because real life does not always look like a scheduled lesson. Choose the format that matches the work you are actually doing.

Daily Training Adventure

The Daily Training Adventure creates a guided plan for the dog you select. The prompts adapt to details in that dog's training profile, including age and training level. Skills previously marked as needing work may be prioritized in future plans, giving you a practical way to revisit areas that are not yet reliable.

Use this option when you want structure without designing a full session. Work through the prompts and record each result accurately. Once you begin, that day's plan cannot be regenerated, so confirm you selected the correct dog first.

Standalone Training Session

Choose Training Session from Start Adventure when you want a focused block of guided practice. The app can provide a set of drills based on the selected dog's profile. Each drill includes an estimated duration, purpose, steps, and safety notes. Check off the drills you complete, add a photo if you wish, and save the session when you are finished.

If you finish early, record what you actually completed. If you started the wrong activity or did not train, discard it rather than creating an inaccurate history.

Walk & Train

Walk & Train adds short training prompts to an outing. It is useful for skills that need real-world context: checking in around distractions, changing pace, settling before crossing, holding a position briefly, or responding to a familiar cue away from home.

Only check off drills you performed. Saving an ordinary walk as Walk & Train without doing the training component does not create a useful record. See How to Earn Rewards Walking Your Dog for the walking side of the app.

Set up your dog's training profile first

Your dog's training profile helps Paw Rewards offer more relevant prompts. Before starting, review the dog's training level, experience, known commands, usual training frequency, and training style. Available levels range from beginner through advanced and K9 advanced.

Choose the level that reflects the dog's current ability—not the level you hope to reach. A cue understood in the kitchen may still be new beside traffic, wildlife, other dogs, or a busy field. Context is part of competence.

Update the profile as your dog develops. An accurate profile is far more useful than an inflated one.

How to log dog training in Paw Rewards

  1. Open Paw Rewards and select the correct dog. Training history and progress belong to the dog who performed the work.
  2. Review the training profile. Confirm the level, experience, known skills, frequency, and preferred style are current.
  3. Choose the matching activity. Use the Daily Training Adventure for a guided daily plan, Training Session for a focused set of drills, or Walk & Train for practice during an outing.
  4. Read the full prompt. Note the goal, steps, equipment, and safety considerations. Adapt or stop if the situation is not appropriate.
  5. Complete the selected work. Keep the criteria clear and appropriate to the dog's age, health, experience, arousal, and role.
  6. Record the result honestly. Use Nailed it when the dog met the intended criterion and Needs work when the skill needs more development.
  7. Save the activity. Confirm it appears in your history and review the progress or eligible Treats shown.

The exact screens, eligibility rules, and Treat values may change as Paw Rewards develops. The signed-in app is always the source of truth for the activity you are completing.

What training counts toward Treats?

A training activity may qualify when it is completed through a supported Paw Rewards flow, saved successfully, and attached to an eligible member account. The activity must meet the current rules displayed in the app. Public accounts may use available features but do not earn Treats.

Do not assume every repetition or activity has the same reward. Treat values and eligibility can vary, so the live result matters more than a number quoted in an older article or screenshot.

Treats are different from skill progress. A session can create a valuable record even without a Treat reward. Skill history, achievements, and Challenge progress show consistency; Treats recognize qualifying participation. Learn more on the Earn Rewards page.

Why “Needs work” is a useful result

Training records lose value if every attempt is marked as a success. Needs work is not failure; it means the skill was not yet reliable under those conditions.

Perhaps the distance, distraction, duration, criterion, or handler timing made the task too difficult. Record the result, then simplify the next repetition or seek help. Paw Rewards can bring developing skills into future plans. Needs work still recognizes genuine effort, although any reward may be lower under current rules.

Use observable criteria. “Worked on recall” is vague; “returned from five metres on a long line with one familiar distraction” gives you a useful record.

Everyday training examples

Training should fit the dog in front of you. These examples show how everyday work can become a trackable Paw Rewards activity without pretending every dog needs the same goals.

  • A young puppy: practise responding to their name, settling briefly on a mat, following a food or toy lure, or waiting for a release at a doorway. Keep the environment simple and the criteria small.
  • An adolescent family dog: practise leash manners on one section of a walk, a calm vehicle exit, recall on a long line, or holding position while a mild distraction passes.
  • A sport or working dog: log a defined piece of heel work, handler focus under arousal, a platform stay, a directional send, an article search, or another skill from the dog's established program.
  • A dog building confidence: record calm observation at a workable distance, engagement with the handler, or a familiar task in a carefully chosen new environment.
  • A busy household: use a brief Training Session for one clear goal rather than waiting for enough time to rehearse everything at once.

These are examples, not universal prescriptions. Different dogs may require very different skills, equipment, progression, and standards.

Methods, tools, and finding the right fit

Paw Rewards does not ask every owner to subscribe to one training ideology. Effective training depends on the individual dog, the handler, the goal, the environment, and the skill being taught. Food, toys, praise, play, environmental access, leash guidance, long lines, platforms, and other tools may all have a place when they are selected thoughtfully and used correctly.

What matters is education. Owners should understand what a technique or tool does, how it fits, when it is appropriate, and when hands-on instruction is needed. Clear communication, fair expectations, sound handling, and respect for the dog are foundations—not labels.

That matters especially for working breeds and demanding roles. The app can organize repetitions and progress; training plans, technical instruction, and safety decisions remain with you and the professionals you choose.

Paw Rewards complements professional training

An app cannot watch timing, assess equipment fit, identify pain, read the environment, or redesign a plan when behaviour changes. Work with an experienced professional for unfamiliar techniques, specialized work, aggression, fear, or whenever you need trained eyes.

Look for relevant experience, transparent methods, strong teaching skills, and a program suited to your dog and goals. Explore the Canadian dog directory, the Puppy Academy training hub, and Puppy Training Basics.

If your training activity is not recording correctly

  • Check the training profile. Training and Walk & Train require the selected dog to have a completed profile.
  • Confirm the dog. If you have more than one dog, make sure the activity was started under the right profile.
  • Look for an existing completion. A task is designed to count once; tapping it repeatedly should not create duplicate credit.
  • Do not regenerate after starting. Once progress has been recorded, today's Daily Training Adventure is locked to preserve the session.
  • Finish the save step. An unfinished or discarded Training Session will not appear as a completed activity.
  • Check eligibility in the live app. A saved session and a Treat-eligible activity are not always the same thing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to complete a long training session to earn Treats?

No. Choose a supported activity that suits your available time and complete the work honestly. A few focused minutes with a clear criterion can be meaningful. Treat eligibility depends on the current in-app rules, not on making a session artificially long.

Does “Needs work” erase my progress?

No. It records that the skill needs more development and can help Paw Rewards prioritize it in future plans. Genuine effort can still be recognized, though the live reward rules may differ from a Nailed it result.

Can I use my trainer's program with Paw Rewards?

Yes. Use Paw Rewards to support the program you have chosen by organizing practice, recording completed work, and watching consistency over time. Follow your trainer's technical instructions when they differ from a general app prompt.

Can training count toward a Challenge?

Some private or friend Challenges can count a completed training session when training is one of the Challenge activities. Official Paw Quests have their own dates, eligibility, and rules. Read the live Challenge or Quest details before participating.

Is Paw Rewards a replacement for a dog trainer?

No. It is a planning, participation, and progress tool. A qualified trainer can observe the dog-handler team, coach technique, adjust the plan, and manage risk in a way an app cannot.

Start your next training activity

Open Training Adventures, select your dog, and choose one clear piece of work that fits today's goal. Complete it, record the result accurately, and let consistent practice—not an artificial perfect score—build the record.

That is how everyday training becomes part of Paw Rewards: one dog, one appropriate plan, and one honest session at a time.
