Rice

Also known as: brown rice, white rice, ground rice

A cereal grain that provides quick, digestible energy — the go-to 'bland diet' carb for upset stomachs.

What it actually is

The seed of the rice plant. White rice has the bran and germ removed (faster to digest, less nutritious). Brown rice keeps them (more fibre, B vitamins, and minerals but less digestible).

Why it's used in dog food

Cheap, digestible, gluten-free, and low-allergen. Kibble makers use it as a starch to bind the pellet during extrusion. Vets recommend boiled white rice with chicken as a bland diet for diarrhea.

A bit of history

Domesticated in China around 8000 BCE. Entered pet food widely in the 1980s when grain-free formulas didn't yet exist and brown rice was marketed as the 'healthy grain' alternative to corn.

Pros

  • Digestible, gluten-free, rarely allergenic
  • White rice is the vet-recommended bland-diet carb
  • Brown rice adds fibre, magnesium, and B vitamins

Cons

  • Provides mostly starch — dogs don't need cereal grains to survive
  • Brown rice from certain regions carries arsenic residue (higher than white)
  • Higher glycemic load than legumes or root vegetables

Safety notes

Safe and well-tolerated by most dogs. Fine as a small portion of a balanced diet, not as a primary calorie source.

Sourcing & quality

US-grown rice tends to be higher in arsenic than Asian-grown. Basmati and jasmine are naturally lower.

The verdict

A neutral, functional grain. Better than corn or wheat in most kibble formulas but not something dogs biologically need.
